PROJECT TERMINOLOGIES

PROJECT LIFECYCLE

A project with a waterfall model usually has the following lifecycle. It starts from planning until closure. Most projects generally use this lifecycle.

(Gray and Larson, 2014)

12 stages of the Lifecycle

(Hartley, 2008)

WHAT ARE PROJECTS?

Before starting to analyse PM, it is important to know what exactly a project is and how different is it from programmes or routine work. Some characteristics that differentiate a project are:

  • single, result-oriented generally on the basis of cost, schedule and performance requirements.

  • temporary or one-time activity.

  • cross functional requirements.

  • unique in nature.

PROJECT CONSTRAINTS

These constraints determine the failure or success of projects.

(Houghton, 2016 )

BEFORE YOU START

PROJECT BOUNDARY

The boundary of the project is the point in time when the project is authorised to start till the time the end product is delivered. All the interactions outside these boundries are said to be external to the project boundary.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS ACTUALLY MEAN ?
